The first step is to locate the item that needs updating. All items are stored in an item bank. To edit the item, open the item bank by navigating to the “Questions and Exams” tab and clicking on the item bank name. Click “All [item bank name]” to load the items.
Searching for an item
Below are the various ways to search for questions in an item bank. The search bar is located at the top right hand side of the screen.
- Search for the canonical ID. The canonical ID is the most reliable identifier for items in Meazure.
- Search for keywords using the search bar. The search bar can find keywords in the question body, the question options, and the metadata.
- Filter information using the advanced search option. The advanced search can isolate specific item types, items in a given workflow state, and items in a specific exam.
- Navigate through the Folders/Passages. If you know which folder or passage an item is located within, it can be easily located by searching through the item bank folder or the associated passage.
Editing an item
Once the item is located in the item bank, select it by clicking on it (which will outline the entire item in orange). Click on the 'Edit Question' button on the bottom tool bar to open the item editor.
The lower portion of the screen is a preview of the item. Use this view to review the content of the question. Update the question stem in the text field beneath the ‘Question Stem’ heading. Update the question distractors in the text fields beneath the ‘Question Options’ heading.
- 'Save and Continue' to apply edits and continue working in the item editor.
- 'Save Changes' to complete the edits and return to the item bank.
- 'Cancel' to exit the item editor without applying any changes.
Each new save of the item creates a new item version. As a security measure, updates to items in the item bank will not appear automatically on exam forms. Check out the How to update item versions on an exam article for more information.
